Westport Outfitters Fishing Report: Week of November 3rd
Okay fish guys & girlsbrace yourselfthis one may sting a littleOver the past seven days I think the average wind speed has been a stiff 20 mph, mix in a few days of rain in between and some air temps inland in the low 30s first thing in the A.M. and its safe to say that the fish may be a bit irritated to say the least. Despite some less than ideal conditions over the weekend and into the week, we still did venture out, but those of you who read these reports religiously, know that we speak the truth and the truth is that the fishing has been quite slow, but the fat lady has not sung just yet!! The bait that was in abundance has definitely be dispersed and/or pushed down with the lousy weather. (Note: we did not say gone, just dispersed). Sunday, Captain Steve was out inshore with the light tackle and fly rods and was just about to call it quits, when one fat 28 inch bass finally made it to the boat on a Yozuri Crystal Minnow. PhewI dont think Steve has been skunked all year, way to keep the track record Captain! Pete Viviano despite the wind and rain ventured out Saturday more or less just to scout the area for some upcoming wade charters. The Mill, Burial Hill and Sherwood were dead from shore with no bait around and subsequently, no fish to the rod either. Chris was back at it early this week in our local waters with much of the same results. Schoolie action can still be had in and around the Saugatuck on soft plastics and small hard baits.Wednesday afternoon we had reports of dozens of schoolies jigging off of Burial hill and a fe large blues. The jigging if you can make it out to the buoys has also been steadily on the rise. Congrats to fellow Westport Striped Bass Club member Sam Bell for hauling in a fat 16 lb blue on Saturday to take the top spot in the clubs yearly contest. Local angler and shop faithful George Moreo, despite the nasty conditions was able to bring two keeper stripers to the boat on Saturday on his T&W rig from Westport Outfitters. If you are persistent, as George is a testament to, your diligence will pay off. When the wind blows and the rain falls and the seas dont cooperate, head inland and thats what Jason and Dan have done all week with several Large Mouth Bass looking to fatten up before the cold really sets in at the Saugatuck Reservoir up to 4 lbs on soft plastics. We are scheduled to do a photo shoot for Ranger on Thursday and Friday of this week so we will be desperately looking for fish for the 2008 brochure, so you can rest assured if there are fish out there, we will find them. We will update the site upon our return to the docks, so stay tuned. Update: Just back in from a three hour photo shoot and after we cleared the decks of ice, we did manage one 8 lb blue to the rail that no doubt we will be in the 2008 catalogue. We ran into breaking fish crashing small baits just inside of Goose Island as the tide turned to outgoing. The black fish bite continues to be red hot which can help pass the time until the bass start moving through. The good reports this week all came on green crabs from the Fairfield area off the spindle just East of Pennfield Reef. Our own Captain Dean from out East was in town and his trusty first mate John Anthony had blacks up to 6 lbs all day Sunday. So thats about it folks, not a very glowing report this week, the truth is the truth, but keep the faith, there is still fish to be had. If it blows again this weekend, stop on down to take advantage of our ongoing shop specials and truckload sale of Quantum rods/reels and much, much more!! THE MONTAUK REPORT Captain Dean reports that the bass fishing is still great out east and the herring run has yet to start. Just wait until you see the Gannets hitting the water at 40 knots off Montauk Point, that's the best sign to know the herring run is on. The top water action is great but finding a weather window in the ocean rips this time of year is a tough task in a small boat. The bottom action is awesome with great reports of Tautog and Cod. The cod boats have not had to travel as far east as they normally do at this time of year, so the charter gets more fishing time and less time motoring. Next week will be the last report for the "TEASER". I may bring the "TUNA DEVIL"(26' Regulator") to Key West this winter.
