As the water hits the mid 70’s and sand eels drift the tide by the acre, fly fishing for Blues continues to deliver a good bite. There has been consistent combat along Fairfield beach, west of Penn Reef. The “flats” in this area which are considerably deeper of course on the outgoing tide, require sinking flies and lines that produce strikes in up to ten feet of water.
There is striper action too, as later in the morning we drifted over a rock pile I wanted to check out, and the sonar lit up with marks over the structure. Scott from The Compleat Angler in Darien, picked up this portly prize on one of my modified half ‘n half deceivers. They are half deceiver, half brick; tied with the largest eyes I have and a little extra weight hidden on board as well.
You can see from the screen shot that the fish were holding very close to the bottom in about 9’, while the wind and tide pushed us along at just under a knot. The heavily weighted fly sinks at the same rate as the line, or better,
and works well on to get in front of the fish on spots like this.
